Magnetic Birmingham is a cross-cutting research and education platform at the University of Birmingham that promotes communication, sharing of expertise and facilities and collaboration across the campus. Magnetism serves as the unifying theme, linking more than ten Schools and Departments across three Colleges. The initiative is proudly led by early career researchers. Magnetic Birmingham is supported by the University of Birmingham’s QR Research and Knowledge Exchange Funding Program (Enhancing Research Culture Fund), Research England, UKRI.

Magnetism in nature

Magnetism is a fundamental force that operates across every scale of the Universe — from atomic particles to galaxies. On Earth, it shapes our planet’s core, shields us from harmful solar wind, and even influences animal navigation and brain activity. Beyond our world, magnetic fields drive solar flares, define planetary magnetospheres, and power the extreme environments of neutron stars and magnetars. Exploring magnetism helps us understand the invisible threads connecting matter, life, and the cosmos.
